A Friend of Mercy sent us this story of the miraculous spiritual and physical healing of a man she prayed for with the Chaplet of Divine Mercy in the late 1990s. Gannon Santiff of Dickinson, Texas, wrote the testimony of his healing. He has since died, but the testimony is powerful nonetheless.

In thanksgiving to my Lord, Jesus Christ, I would like to share the story of my miraculous healing.

On June 2, 1998, I went to the emergency room thinking I had a bad gall bladder. After numerous tests, I was told I had esophageal cancer.

Many people told me that they were praying for me, but one woman in particular offered to pray with me. Thinking there were enough people already praying for me, I foolishly declined.

On July 28, 1998, I underwent major surgery to remove a cancerous tumor the size of two clasped hands. A small stomach was constructed out of my small intestine and attached to the remainder of my esophagus. The operation was a success, and I returned to work one month later.

In April of 1999, on a follow-up visit, the doctor decided to have me go through one more endoscopic procedure before releasing me from his care. The results showed that I had a nodule on my esophagus — the return of the dreaded cancer. Another biopsy was scheduled in a month.

Mary, the woman who had previously offered to pray with me, came to my mind. I called her immediately. I told her that my relationship with God was not in good shape. I had been away from the Catholic Church for a long time. She told me to call a priest and make an appointment with him as soon as possible. I did just as I was told.

In June of 1999, I met with the priest and we discussed both my medical and spiritual problems. Before the meeting was over, I received absolution for my sins, and the next day I received Holy Communion for the first time in 33 years.

A few days later, my wife and I met Mary in an Adoration Chapel and prayed a Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy together. I realized later that I had an inner calm and peace that I had not felt in years.

Days later, the doctor's office called asking if I could come in for another endoscopic test — he wanted to be more thorough before beginning my treatment.

Returning to the hospital for the test, I was filled with hope from the many prayers. As I woke up from the test, the doctor came in. He was scratching his head and said he did not find anything. The nodule found in the first two tests was gone, and there was no indication of it ever being present.

I have come to the conclusion that, through my friend Mary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, God's mercy was granted upon me. First was my return to the Lord after 33 years. Second was the miraculous healing of my deadly cancer. Last of all, my wife decided to convert to Catholicism.

I am sharing my blessings with all of you, and I urge you to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and share it with others. We all can be instruments of the Lord. We just have to willingly offer ourselves to Jesus and ask Him to use us for His divine purposes.
