Of Temperance and Gardening

Father Andy Davy, MIC, pastor of St. Mary Parish in Plano, Illinois, also writes poetry. Here, we share some of his work and his commentaries on that work in the latest installment of a weekly series.

I am the Water,
I am the Sun,
If the law of Goldilocks isn't followed,
Then I'm afraid you are done.

I am the Water,
I am the Sun,
We surround you with energy,
Yet we enter not anyone,

For we water,
And we sun.
Materials for growth? Yes we are...
But not the One

Who causes the Kingdom to stir
In everyone.

This poem speaks of creation's nurturing as an image for the way God grows his kingdom within us. Our Father knows what we need even before we ask him!

He “gave his life for the ransom of many” (Mk 10:45). This verse describes our Lord Jesus Christ, of course, but could also well be said of St. Damien de Veuster of Molokai (feast day: May 10), a priest who served on the leper colony of Molokai in the Hawaiian Islands during the 19th century.

"When the liturgy parallels what is happening in my life, I pay attention," Br. Josh, MIC, says, "and the Lord provided a sign in the sky that day."
