Archangels Three

The Archangels, whose feast we celebrate on Sept. 29, are awesome. If you don't know them now, then get going!

We only know of three archangels, all named in Scripture: Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael.

Michael is the prince of the heavenly host, the commander of God's army, essentially. According to tradition, he led the charge against Lucifer when the devil and all his angels rebelled against God (see Rev. 12:7), crying out, "Who is like God? There is none like God!" His very name, Michael, means "Who is like God?" For this great fidelity to God and zeal for God's will, God made Michael the commander of the heavenly host, elevating the relatively lowly archangel over all the other nine choirs of angels.

Raphael is a healer, according to the depiction in the Book of Tobit. He disguises himself and wanders with Tobit's son, Tobias, eventually guiding Tobias to exorcise a murderous demon, helping heal Tobit's blindness, and generally making all well for that family.

And Gabriel is a messenger, best known to Christians everywhere for visiting Mary at the Annunciation (see Lk 1), but also coming to the Prophet Daniel (see Dan 8-10).

Take, read! Learn more from the Scriptures about these heavenly friends of God's chosen people, of Israel and the Church. They want to help you to serve the Lord Jesus by prayers, words, and deeds of mercy (see Diary, 742, 1317). They want to help you console the Heart of Jesus by your loving, trustful response to His immense self-sacrifice, to His mercy that demands to be spent (Diary, 367, 1074, 1076, 1397, 1521, 1578). They will come faster than thought, as quick as love from the Heart of God, and bring many of their fellow angels, as well.

Call upon them for intercession, that they may mediate God's assistance in your every need. Call on Michael for protection, Raphael for healing, and Gabriel for help spreading the good news of Jesus Christ, the Divine Mercy, to every heart.

They await your call!
