"I have given you a model to follow" — Jn 13:15

In today's Gospel reading, we read:

So when he had washed their feet and put his garments back on and reclined at table again, he said to them, "Do you realize what I have done for you? You call me 'teacher' and 'master,' and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do" (Jn 13:12-15).

What a contrast to the squabbles and discussions of the disciples about who among them was greatest, who would have a higher place in Heaven … a topic brought up right after Jesus had announced His own suffering and Death.

What has the Master taught by this example of service? If we are to live in imitation of Christ, we must learn to be a servant to others, to serve God by humbly serving others.

Prayer: Help me to be humble, Lord, so I may imitate You and please You.
