No-brainer

"[W]hoever loses his life for my sake will save it."
- Lk 9:24

Merriam-Webster defines "no-brainer" as an informal expression for "a decision or choice that is very easy to make and requires very little thought." Today's first readings set forth several choices. You'd think that choosing life, blessings, and obedience would fall under the no-brainer category. But following God's commandments, statutes, and decrees isn't always easy.

In today's Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples that He will suffer greatly and be killed, and on the third day be raised. Jesus freely chose to do this because of His submission to the Father and His desire to save mankind out of love for us. The next part of what Jesus says is addressed "to all":

If anyone wishes to come aft er me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?

Carrying our cross daily means dying to our own desires and surrendering to God's will in spite of the temptations around us. We do have help, though. We have grace that we receive through the Sacraments.

What's left to think about?

Prayer: Lord, help me to remain faithful. To be with You forever in Heaven is worth more than the whole world.
