Astounded

Jesus himself drew near and walked with them. - Lk 24:15

The men on the road to Emmaus had been hopeful that Jesus would be the One to redeem Israel. How disappointed these travelers must have been! Now, the Risen Jesus (whom they do not yet recognize) joins them in their walk.

These men apparently had been close followers of Jesus, since they were from the same group that included the women who went to the tomb to find His Body was not there. That news had "astounded" them (see Lk 24:22).

Then, Jesus begins to explain what He says they should have known all along through what the prophets spoke: that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and enter into His glory. Now, these men are astounded by their Guest. They urge Him to stay with them. And, as we read, at the breaking of the bread, their eyes are opened and they recognize Him (see Lk 24:30).

Jesus Himself vanishes from their sight - and yet what astounds them here? Not His disappearance. It's how their hearts burned to hear Him open the Scriptures to them. They are astounded by God's Word. They could now confirm with the other disciples that the Lord has risen.

Prayer: Lord, I love Your Word.
