Between the Lines

"Woman, why are you weeping?" - Jn 20:15

Reading today's Gospel, we already know that Jesus is risen. Mary Magdalene, however, doesn't understand the Scripture yet. And she is heartbroken.

Mary is weeping outside the tomb. She looks inside and sees two angels, who ask her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" (Jn 20:3). She replies to them, "They have taken my Lord, and I don't know where they laid him" (Jn 20:14). Now, the Risen Jesus asks her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?" He asks the same question as the angels. Mary is still weeping. Moreover, she's willing to turn away from a conversation with two angels to ask a supposed gardener if he knows where Jesus has been moved. She is committed!

After Jesus reveals who He truly is, she calls him "Teacher." It's interesting what He says to her next (emphasis added): "Stop holding on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father" (Jn 20:17). Indeed, He confirms He is the Resurrected Jesus. But look at the words "stop holding on to me." There is no text saying that she reached out to hold Jesus. We just see the effect of Mary's action. Especially in comparison to the sorrow of the previous moments - her love and joy cannot be contained.

Prayer: Jesus, I trust in You. Embrace me in Your just mercy.
